Cattle on feed numbers released

Oklahoma: The inventory of cattle on feed was 305,000 head in Oklahoma on May 1, for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head, down 10 percent from the previous month and down 9 percent from May 1, 2007. Placements during April were 40,000, 26 percent below one year ago. Marketings of fed cattle during April were 74,000, up 9 percent from the same month last year. Other disappearance during April totaled 1,000 head.

Iowa: There were 806,000 cattle on feed for the slaughter market in all feedlots in Iowa on May 1, down 2 percent from April 1, and down 6 percent from May 1, 2007. Feedlots with a capacity greater than 1,000 head had 530,000 head on feed, down 4 percent from last month but unchanged from last year. Feedlots with a capacity less than 1,000 head had 276,000 head on feed, unchanged from last month, but down 15 percent from last year.

Placements during April totaled 95,000 head, an increase of 14 percent from last month and 2 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity greater than 1,000 head placed 59,000 head, unchanged from last month but down 3 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity less than 1,000 head placed 36,000 head. This is up 50 percent from last month and 13 percent from last year.

Marketings for April were 108,000 head, up 16 percent from last month and 17 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity greater than 1,000 head marketed 77,000 head, up 13 percent from last month and 31 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity less than 1,000 head marketed 31,000 head, up 24 percent from last month but down 6 percent from last year. Other disappearance totaled 7,000 head.

Nebraska: In Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 2.38 million cattle on feed on May 1, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office. The inventory was down 2 percent from last year but 3 percent above May 1, 2006.

Placements in feedlots during April totaled 340,000 head, up 17 percent from 2007 and 6 percent above 2006. This is tied with 1999 for the highest April placements since the data series began in 1993.

Marketings of fed cattle during April totaled 400,000 head, up 18 percent from last year and 3 percent above April two years ago. Other disappearance during April totaled 10,000 head, the same as 2007 and 2006.

South Dakota: In South Dakota's 1,000 plus capacity feedlots reported 220,000 cattle on feed for the slaughter market on May 1, according to the South Dakota office of National Agricultural Statistics Service. This is down 10,000 head from a year earlier and down 5,000 head from a month earlier.

Placements during April totaled 33,000 head, down 3,000 head from last year but up 1,000 head from March 2008.

Marketings of fed cattle during April totaled 37,000 head, up 3,000 head from last year but unchanged from March 2008.

Other disappearance during April totaled 1,000 head, down 1,000 head from last year and down 4,000 head from March 2008.

Kansas: The number of cattle on feed on May 1 in Kansas feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity totaled 2.29 million head, down 3 percent from a year ago and down 5 percent from April 1. Placements during April totaled 360,000 head, up 1 percent from a year ago and 18 percent below March 2008 placements of 440,000 head. Marketings during April totaled 470,000 head, 6 percent above April 2007 and 13 percent above March 2008. Other disappearance was 20,000 head, down 20,000 from a year ago and up 5,000 head from the previous month. The percent of April placements by weight was: under 600 pounds, 13 percent; 600-699 pounds, 19 percent; 700-799 pounds, 32 percent; and 800 pounds or heavier, 36 percent.

Texas: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 2.69 million head on May 1, up slightly from a year ago. According to the monthly report released by the Texas Field Office, the estimate was down 7 percent from the April 1 level. Producers placed 360,000 head in commercial feedlots during April, down 5 percent from a year ago, and down 20 percent from the March 2008 total.

Texas commercial feeders marketed 540,000 head during April, up 10 percent from last year and up 13 percent from last month.

On May 1, there were 2.25 million head of cattle and calves on feed in the Northern High Plains, 84 percent of the state's total. The number on feed across the area was down 1 percent from last year but down 7 percent from the April total.

April placements in the Northern High Plains totaled 294,000 head, down 23 percent from the March total. Marketings were up 12 percent from last month to 465,000 head.

Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States in feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 11.1 million head on May 1. This inventory was 1 percent below May 1, 2007.

Placements in feedlots during April totaled 1.54 million head, 2 percent below April 2007. April placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds totaled 315,000 head; 600-699 pounds totaled 278,000 head; 700-799 pounds totaled 428,000 head; 800 pounds and greater totaled 515,000 head. Marketings of fed cattle during April totaled 2.01 million head, 11 percent above 2007.

United States: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.1 million head on May 1. The inventory was 1 percent below May 1, 2007 and 4 percent below May 1, 2006.

Placements in feedlots during April totaled 1.54 million, 2 percent below 2007 and 5 percent below 2006. Net placements were 1.46 million head. During April, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 315,000, 600-699 pounds were 278,000, 700-799 pounds were 428,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 515,000.

Marketings of fed cattle during April totaled 2.01 million, 11 percent above 2007 and 13 percent above 2006. This is the highest fed cattle marketings for the month of April since the series began in 1996. Other disappearance totaled 75,000 during April, 24 percent below 2007 and 14 percent below 2006.
