Beef producers encourage blood donationsPIERRE, S.D. (AP)--Those who raise cattle in South Dakota are offering certificates for beef purchases to people who donate blood. As part of the state Beef Industry Council's "Pump Up the Iron and Eat Beef" campaign, United Blood Services Centers in South Dakota will issue $2 Beef Certificates or Beef Bucks each time people donate blood in May. The discount coupons can be used toward the price of beef purchases in restaurants and retail stores. This is the fourth year for the promotion. According to the donor recruitment director of United Blood Services, the coupons have been excellent recruitment tools. "We've enjoyed a steady increase in donation events each year we've partnered with SDBIC," Beth-Anne Ferley said. From 2005 to 2007, the number of times people donated blood during May grew from 3,200 to 3,900--a 12 percent increase, she said. It's a two-way street, said Holly Swee, the Beef Industry Council nutrition director. "Not only do we help save lives by securing an abundant supply of blood, but it gives us an opportunity to educate the public on the important role beef plays in a healthy diet," she said. Swee said beef helps replenish the body's iron after giving blood. The program is funded by the $1-per-head checkoff payment on all cattle sold in South Dakota. 5/26/08 Date: 5/22/08 Advertisement
