A stellar week for plantingIowa A full week of dry weather allowed farmers to gain ground on planting during the week ending May 18, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Iowa Field Office, May 19. All Iowa districts have now planted more than 50 percent of their corn acreage. Emerged corn accelerated with warmer, drier soil. There were 5.3 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 5.3 days last year at this time. Topsoil moisture rated 0 percent very short, 2 percent short, 74 percent adequate, and 24 percent surplus across the state. Subsoil moisture rated 0 percent very short, 0 percent short, 69 percent adequate, and 31 percent surplus. Oat seeding was 93 percent complete, approximately 12 days behind last year. Oats emerged was 58 percent, behind last year's 90 percent and the five-year average of 95 percent. Soybeans are 34 percent planted. Corn is 78 percent planted, behind last year's and the five-year average of 88 and 92 percent, respectively. Corn planting is 8 days behind the five-year average. Fertilizer application is 94 percent complete, two percentage points behind last year and three percentage points behind the five-year average. Pasture and range condition rated 3 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 11 percent excellent. Cattle are being moved to permanent pasture. 5/26/08 Date: 5/20/08
