Walnut Creek Extension wheat plot tours planned

Walnut Creek Extension District will hold four Wheat Plot Variety Demonstration Tours May 28 and May 30. K-State Wheat Breeder Joe Martin will be the featured presenter on two tours scheduled for May 28. Erik DeWolf, K-State Plant Pathologist, will attend all four Tours and discuss wheat diseases. David Coltrain, Walnut Creek Extension Agent, will present Marketing and Economic Information at all four plot demonstrations.

The first Tour starts on May 28 at 8 a.m., at the Ness County plot of cooperator Tom Frusher that features 27 varieties. Brian Olson, K-State Northwest Area Crop Specialist, will discuss varieties. Directions to this plot are 12 miles south of Ness City on Highway 283 and two miles east on Road 10. Refreshments will be provided.

The next stop on May 28 begins at 4 p.m., at the Brownell Research Plot in Ness County where Martin has 175 replicated breeding lines and check lines growing. Directions to the plot are going west of Brownell on Highway 4 in northeast Ness County, take Ness Road Z south for eight miles. Refreshments will be provided.

The last stop on May 28 starts at 6 p.m., at the Rush County plot of cooperator Mark Baus. This plot is located on Highway 4, three miles west of Hargrave. Martin and DeWolf will discuss the 23 varieties. A light supper will be available at this stop.

The final tour is scheduled for May 30, 6 p.m., in Lane County with a plot that has 20 wheat and four triticale varieties. Brian Olson will discuss wheat varieties and cooperator Vance Ehmke will provide information on the triticale varieties and an update about the pilot project with Seaboard feeding triticale. A light supper will be provided at this plot that is located seven miles west of Dighton on Highway 96 and one mile south on Eagle Road.

This school is sponsored by the Walnut Creek Extension District and the following grain elevators: Bazine Cooperative Grain and Supply, Bondurant Grain, Midland Marketing, Mid-States Farmers Cooperative, and Ness Farm and Seed. Kansas Crop Improvement Association will provide water for all four Tours.
