Animal Science Field Day planned in LexingtonNebraska To learn more about livestock, have fun with friends, and meet new people, plan to be at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, West Central District Youth Animal Science Field Day Thursday, June 5, in Lexington. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and wraps up at 3:30 p.m. in the Dawson County Extension Office located Fairgrounds, said Extension Educator Brian Bosshamer. The field day will present a variety of fun and educational activities about many different aspects of livestock production, Bosshamer said. Youth will participate in teams of four to six and rotate through seven stations throughout the day. People between the ages of 10 and 18 may come as individuals, in small groups and in teams. Individuals and smaller groups will be combined to form a teams. Organizers encourage teams to work together through the day. Bosshamer encouraged parents and other adults interested in the livestock industry and educating youth to attend and participate as well. The event may help prepare and youth to participate various 4-H and FFA competitions, but even youth not involved in contests will have an opportunity to learn more about the livestock industry, Bosshamer said. They will also gain important life skills and values such as communication, critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork. The Youth Animal Science Field Day provides experience, but it is not a competition. Station topics include beef, sheep, and swine evaluation, feeds and feeding, hay and forage evaluation, meats and food safety, a breeding and performance problem, a marketing problem, and equipment ID. Each station will be geared for two levels of participation: a senior division for those 12 to 18 and a junior level under age 12, Bosshamer said. The stations are designed to be learning experiences in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. The field day is sponsored by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln West Central Research and Extension District, the Dawson County Extension Office, Nebraska 4-H and the UNL Animal Science Department, Bosshamer said .
