West Plains regional salesThe Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., May 6, reported receipts of 4,200 head, compared to 2,812 head last week and 2,564 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo. Compared to last week, steer calves sold steady to $2 lower, with most that weighed 450 to 550 pounds selling at $4 to $7 lower. Steer yearlings were fully steady. Heifers sold steady to $2 higher, at times, and $3 higher on those that weighed 450 to 650 pounds. The supply was moderate, with a 1,200-head string of backgrounded steer yearlings, sorted into several attractive load lots for uniform type and color. Most buyer cell phones activated air space as these large drafts hit the ring. Demand was good, weaned calves with shots and yearlings collected top billing with bawling calves, especially those fleshy, continuing to catch flack and discount. The supply consisted of 73% steers and 27% heifers, with nearly 65% weighing over 600 pounds.
