USDA-NRCS hosts grazing management workshop

Grazing lands conservation and stewardship are essential

Texas

Landowners and producers will receive valuable grazing information at the first Blackland Prairie Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative Coalition's Grazing Management Workshop, which will be held at the 77 Ranch located in Blooming Grove on May 16. In 2007, the 77 Ranch received the Leopold Conservation Award for their achievements in conservation and land stewardship.

Registration starts at 8 a.m., and the workshop will be from 8 a.m. through noon at the ranch. Grazing educational materials and lunch will be given to all attendees upon registration for the workshop, along with three hours of continuing education units in pesticide applicator's license and Certified Professional in Rangeland Management.

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service will present discussions about rangeland plant basics and other valuable grazing topics. The vision for the workshop emerged to help people work together to maintain and improve the management, productivity, and health of our nation's privately owned grazing lands.

"Range and pasture specialists will provide valuable insight about grazing management issues, which include appreciating rangeland resources, and setting proper stocking rates based on balancing forage supply with animal demand," said Jeff Goodwin, NRCS rangeland management specialist in Corsicana, Texas. "Also, NRCS personnel and conservation professionals will discuss grazing management and proper distribution, and the workshop will conclude with a session about alternatives to inorganic fertilizers on introduced pastures."

Sponsors for the grazing management workshop include NRCS, Texas Agrilife Extension, Dow AgroSciences, Navarro County Soil and Water Conservation District, 77 Ranch, Blackland Prairie GLCI, and the Navarro County Extension Livestock Committee.

For those who plan on attending the workshop, please RSVP by May 12 at 903-654-3075. For more information, please contact Jeff Goodwin at 903-874-5131, or Randy Henry at 817-467-3867. GLCI information can be obtained at www.glci.org and www.tx.usda.nrcs.gov or contact your local NRCS service center for details.
