OKC West livestock auction reportThe OKC West Livestock Market Inc., El Reno, Okla., reported receipts of 5,848 head May 7, compared to 5,850 head last week and 2,460 head last year, according to the USDA-Oklahoma Department of Agriculture Market News, Oklahoma City, Okla. Compared to last week, feeder steers were steady to $2 higher, with the most advance on those at 850 to 950 pounds, and heavier weights lost the $5 plus advance from last week. Steer calves were $2 to $3 higher. Feeder heifers and heifer calves were steady. Demand was very good as supplies of feeder cattle somewhat tight for the season. Several cattle were available from south of the Red River. Though many of these were Brahman crosses many were in thin flesh and showed gaunt weight-ups and this made the difference for their kind. Heavy rains fell over much of Oklahoma throughout the day with up to 3 inches being reported in some areas. Weigh-ups were gaunt to average. Flesh conditions were thin to moderate. The supply included 82% over 600 pounds, 14% under 600 pounds, 4% cows and bulls. The total included 24% heifers. Slaughter cows were steady to $1 higher. Slaughter bulls were $2 to $3 higher. Packer demand good as meat prices remain high with still good demand from the wholesale and retail levels. Several pairs available off one consignment and these sold to very good demand. A total of 254 cows and bulls sold with 36% going to packers.
