Beef network splitting off some functions

BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP)--The Montana Beef Network is dividing its functions between two separate entities.

A Montana limited liability company, Verified Beef, will be responsible for the part of the program that hundreds of Montana ranchers have used to certify feeder calves for source and age verification as well as carcass data tracking and collection.

MBN will continue its other functions including Beef Quality Assurance, educational programming and beef cattle research, the network announced late April 25.

MBN has been a cooperative project between Montana State University and the Montana Stockgrowers Association. Since MBN began in 1999, more than 250,000 calves have been certified. Over the past three years, MBN's primary emphasis has been qualifying Montana cattle for beef exports markets.

"It's always been the intention to move the source and age verification as well as carcass data collection functions of MBN to the private sector to make the program more sustainable," said Dr. John Paterson, Extension Beef Specialist at MSU.

Andy Kellom, operations manager of Verified Beef LLC, said the owners of the newly created company are committed to the livestock industry and the success of the program.

"Current MBN producer-participants will see little change in what we do," Kellom said.
