Upcoming classes and eventsBy Tara McKnight Texas AgriLife Extension Service agent, horticulture, Wichita County Texas The area's seventh Texas Master Naturalist class is scheduled to kick off March 25 at 7 p.m. The class is co-sponsored by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Texas AgriLife Extension Service. It is modeled after the Texas Master Gardener program and allows participants to attend a series of training classes followed by some volunteer hours to achieve their certification. The classes will be taught by Midwestern State University science professors, Texas Parks and Wildlife staff and other conservation professionals. Enrollees will receive a broad cross section of instruction on local flora, fauna and their habitats. In addition to classroom hours, there will be four field trips including fish sampling and identification at Lake Wichita, searching for fossils in Jack County, a visit to the River Bend Nature Conservatory, and a trip to identify native grasses and wildflowers. Classes generally meet twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The final class is scheduled for May 8. The new Texas Master Naturalists will be able to work with nature organizations on a variety of projects and help educate the community on natural resource conservation. The enrollment application deadline is March 14 and space is limited. For more class information and applications contact Mark Howell at 940-766-2383 or by e-mail at Mark.Howell@tpwd.state.tx.us .
