Rural Development testifies before legislative committee

Kansas

USDA Rural Development State Director Chuck Banks testified in late February before the Kansas Legislature's House Economic Development and Tourism Committee, covering the Agency's overall programming, along with the tornado disaster, flood, and recovery assistance provided by USDA Rural Development. State Director Banks' testimony was made at the request of the committee's Chairperson, Kansas Representative Lana Gordon.

"USDA Rural Development, with the assistance of other federal agencies, State of Kansas, private and public sector partners, delivers a wide range of programming, along with extensive community and economic development assistance, which benefit both rural Kansas and the entire state. Thousands of Kansans enjoy the benefits of the Agency's funding and technical assistance each and every day," remarked Banks during his testimony.

USDA Rural Development is committed to helping Kansas residents who were impacted by the storms which struck the state in late June and early July. The Agency has excellent grant and low interest loan programs to help individuals and families finance rebuilding or repairs of homes. USDA has been a long-time leader in supporting affordable homeownership and providing needed community and economic development programming for Kansans across the rural areas of the state.

USDA Rural Development is administering special supplemental funding, covering housing, business redevelopment and public building/services, to help support the recovery of Greensburg and Kiowa County. Agency program funding is being used to assist those affected in south-central and southeast Kansas by the flooding.

USDA Rural Development's mission is to deliver programs that support increasing economic opportunities and enhancing the quality of life for rural Americans. As a venture capital entity, USDA Rural Development provides equity and technical assistance to finance and foster growth in homeownership, business development, and critical community and technology infrastructure in rural America. Since 2001, USDA Rural Development has delivered over $1.2 billion for Kansas covering all Agency programs, supporting well over $6 billion in future economic development for the Sunflower State.

For additional information regarding USDA Rural Development programs, individuals may call the Agency's state headquarters at 785-271-2701 or log onto the state's Agency website at: www.rurdev.usda.gov/ks.
