NCTA to host farm and ranch seminar aimed at estate, transition planning

Seminar to be held at NCTA on March 27 in conjunction with 100 Cow Outreach Meeting

Nebraska

Family farmers, ranchers and interested others will benefit from a one-day workshop on farm estate and transition planning to be held March 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis, Nebraska.

Sponsored in partnership with the Farm and Ranch Project of Legal Aid of Nebraska and the Risk Management Agency of the USDA, the aim of the seminar is to give participants a reliable, useful general understanding of many of the issues involved with passing on the family farm. According to Dean Weldon Sleight, the information presented will be timely and beneficial.

"So often we see 40- to 50-year olds end up in the attorney's office because Dad has passed away and they have no knowledge of what will happen to the place," Sleight shares. "By the time they reach this point in their lives, it's very difficult to begin the ownership process that should have started 20 years ago."

Dave Goeller, Farm and Ranch Transition Specialist with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Joe Hawbaker, agricultural law attorney, will present the program focused on topics such as farm and business transition, business succession planning, and estate planning.

"Most producers don't give much thought to issues such as family dynamics and expectations in a transfer situation," Sleight adds. "We hope to use this program to answer many of those questions that have come up but just haven't been asked."

The seminar will take place at the NCTA Veterinary Teaching Hospital Amphitheater. There is no cost to attend and lunch will be provided. Those interested in attending are strongly encouraged to pre-register.
