Most of alfalfa in good conditionNew Mexico There were 6.5 days suitable for field work during the week ending March 23, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, New Mexico Field Office, March 24. Topsoil moisture was 52 percent very short, 32 percent short and 16 percent adequate. Wind damage was 20 percent light and 15 percent moderate. Freeze damage was 11 percent light and 14 percent moderate. Farmers continue to prepare fields and irrigation systems for spring planting. Alfalfa was reported as 6 percent poor, 27 percent fair and 67 percent good. Irrigated winter wheat was reported as 9 percent poor, 28 percent fair, 59 percent good, and 4 percent excellent, with 40 percent being reported as grazed. Dry winter wheat was reported as 17 percent very poor, 73 percent poor, and 10 percent fair, with 7 percent being reported as grazed. Total winter wheat was reported as 10 percent very poor, 47 percent poor, 17 percent fair, 24 percent good, and 2 percent excellent, with 20 percent being reported as grazed. Onions were reported as 10 percent fair, 80 percent good and 10 percent excellent. Lettuce was reported as 20 percent fair, 20 percent good and 60 percent excellent. Chile was reported as 9 percent poor, 42 percent fair, and 49 percent good with 30 percent reported as planted. Cattle conditions were reported as 26 percent poor, 35 percent fair and 39 percent good. Sheep conditions were reported as 5 percent very poor, 19 percent poor, 32 percent fair and 44 percent good. Range and pasture conditions were reported as 17 percent very poor, 45 percent poor, 28 percent fair and 10 percent good. Livestock producers have been busy supplemental feeding and hauling water, as well as shearing sheep and helping with calving. 3/31/08 Date: 3/27/08
