Kansas House Ag Committee votes on U.S. beef promotionKansas After a hearing on March 12, where many Kansas producers testified on behalf of using checkoff funds to promote USA beef in the United States, the Kansas House Agriculture Committee voted on the resolution. House Ag Committee voted 6 to 5 not to pass the resolution through the committee; the vote was taken by a voice vote. David Pfrang, a cattleman from Nemaha County and Kansas Cattlemen's Association Vice president exclaimed, "I can't believe this didn't pass the committee. If those producers from any organization knew that this resolution promotes U.S. beef, I can't believe they wouldn't be behind it 100 percent; yet, there was opposition to this which I believe influenced the committee to vote it down." DaryI Larson, Kansas Farmers Union vice president and KCA treasurer remarked, "I am deeply disappointed in all of the representatives on the Kansas House Ag. Committee that voted against this resolution or didn't vote at all. In my opinion these representatives either didn't understand the reason for this resolution or they have intentionally voted against all USA cattle producers that want the ability to use our beef checkoff dollars to promote our own beef." "Promoting USA beef with checkoff funds was an issue that KCA heard from Kansas producers over and over again in the past 12 months. This is a very important topic we are addressing, and Kansas producers deserve to have their voices heard. Although the resolution did not pass at this time, KCA will address all legislators' concerns and continue to work for Kansas producers on this issue as well as other local and state issues," stated Morris County producer and KCA Executive Director, Brandy Carter. 3/31/08 Date: 3/27/08 Advertisement
