Great Plains Canola Association forms

Canola growers in the southern High Plains region now have an organization to spread their message.

On July 19, 2007, the Great Plains Canola Association was officially formed. Jeff Scott, Pond Creek, Okla., was elected as the group's first president, and Bob Schrock, Kiowa, Kan., was elected as vice president. Michael Marlow, Enid, Okla., will serve as the first secretary-treasurer.

The articles of incorporation have been filed with the Oklahoma Secretary of State, and the board of directors adopted a set of by-laws. The GPCA board includes John Haas, Larned, Kan., and Gene Neuens, Oklahoma City. Kenlon Johannes was named executive director and association's offices will be in Topeka, Kan.

Monsanto and John Deere provided initial monetary support to set up the association. The board is working with an attorney from Kansas State University to put together the documents required for an IRS non-profit designation. GPCA is also working toward creating state checkoff programs in Kansas and Oklahoma to fund research and market development.

Membership is open to individuals and companies with an interest in canola. For more information about membership and dues, visit www.greatplainscanola.com.
