Arkansas livestock market summary

The weekly summary of livestock sales in Arkansas for the week ending March 20, showed estimated receipts of 8,495 head, compared to 9,066 head last week and 9,990 head last year, according to the Arkansas Extension Service-USDA Market News, Little Rock, Ark.

Compared to last week, slaughter cows sold weak to mostly $2 lower. Slaughter bulls sold $2 lower. Feeders sold mostly $2 to $4 lower. Heavy rains and flooding over much of the state curtailed receipts late in the week hampering livestock movement and lessening demand. The supply was composed of 5,015 stocker and feeder calves, 1,790 feeder yearlings, 785 replacement cows, 815 slaughter cows and 90 slaughter bulls. The feeder supply was 45% yearling heifers.

Slaughter cows: Breakers, 75 to 80% lean, 1000 to 1500 lbs., 46.00 to 52.00; high dressing, 52.00 to 56.50. Boners, 80 to 85% lean, 950 to 1400 lbs., 46.00 to 52.00; high dressing, 52.00 to 58.00; low dressing, 37.00 to 46.00. Lean, 85 to 90% lean, 900 to 1300 lbs., 43.00 to 49.00; high dressing, 49.00 to 54.50; low dressing, 35.00 to 43.00. Light, 85 to 92% lean, 700 to 950 lbs., 34.00 to 40.00; high dressing, 40.00 to 46.00; low dressing, 25.00 to 34.00.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 to 2, 1000 to 2100 lbs., 58.00 to 65.00; high dressing, 65.00 to 74.00; low dressing, 48.00 to 57.00.

Small and medium frame 1 to 2, 5 to 10 years old, 750 to 950 lbs., with 100- to 200-lb. calves, 650.00 to 750.00 per pair.
