2008 Women Managing the Farm Conference provides farm women with resources

Kansas

The conference provided attendees with presentations regarding business planning, health, managing employees and more. The conference also provided opportunities for networking and learning from others attending the conference.

Kansas Wheat producer policy specialist Dana Peterson has been involved with the conference for several years. She attended this year's conference and moderated a session on Women Leading Agriculture.

"There was good attendance at this year's conference, with a good mix of returning women and first timers," said Peterson. "I would like to commend USDA's Risk Management Agency for continuing to support this outreach program for women."

The WMF conference was developed for all women involved in an operation from the full-time manager to the absentee landowner needing a bit of insight about managing her investment. New to the conference this year was a health fair to celebrate ag women's health.

Women Managing the Farm is a comprehensive program for farm owners, partners and rookies. No matter the amount of knowledge about or involvement in agriculture, the conference was specially designed for women in agriculture. Women Managing the Farm provided valuable tools and materials to address production, price, human, financial and legal risks of farm women at all levels. The conference provided farm women with tools to increase overall support through various avenues such as comprehensive training, area networks of support and an online discussion group.

The project builds upon the knowledge that farm women do play an active role in all aspects of financial and risk management of the farm. The changing dynamics and economics of the farm operation and the farm household lead to the changing roles women play on the farm today.

"The 2007 Census of Agriculture will provide us with new information about the role of women in agriculture, likely indicating that women are taking a variety of management responsibilities for Kansas farms," said Peterson. The results of the Census will be available in February 2009.

The goal of the project is to prepare modern farm women with resources to enable them to utilize and manage their farm interests effectively. The project helps farm women to be successfully prepared to participate in multiple farm roles by having the training, risk management tools, and professional resources available to them.

Women Managing the Farm is made possible by funding from the USDA Risk Management Agency Outreach and Assistance Partnership Program. Additional supporters include Kansas Grain Sorghum Producers Association, American Farmers and Ranchers, USDA Farm Service Agency, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Services, Kansas Soybean Association, Kansas Rural Center, Kansas Department of Agriculture, Kansas Agri-Women, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Corn Growers Association, Kansas State University Research & Extension, Kansas Rural Family Helpline, Kansas Department of Commerce, Kansas Cooperative Council, Kansas Beef Council, Kansas Assoc. of Family and Community Education, Kansas Agriculture Mediation Services, Kansas Farm Bureau, Frontier Farm Credit, Farm Credit of Central Kansas, Farm Credit of Ness City, High Plains Farm Credit, Farm Credit of Western Kansas, Farm Credit of Southwest Kansas, and the Kansas Wheat Commission.
