Sioux Falls sheep sales

The Sioux Falls sheep auction, Sioux Falls, S.D., reported receipts of 648 head Feb. 25, compared to 631 head last week and 429 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News Service, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Compared to last week, wooled slaughter lambs sold $2 to $4 lower. Good and Utility slaughter ewes were too few to test. Cull slaughter ewes sold $2 to $3 higher on a light test. There were not enough comparable sales on feeder lambs for an accurate market trend. Demand and buyer attendance was moderate. Light weight slaughter lambs continued to be in high demand. Receipts included about 38% slaughter lambs, 35% slaughter ewes, 14% feeder lambs and the balance was bucks and miscellaneous sheep.

Slaughter lambs: Wooled, Choice and Prime 2 to 4, 121 to 129 lbs., 93.00 to 93.50 (93.22); 133 to 138 lbs., 93.25 to 93.75 (93.54). Wooled Good and Choice 1 to 2, 68 to 69 lbs., 132.00 to 134.50 (133.60).

Slaughter ewes: Good 2 to 3, 17 head, 148 lbs., 36.00; 11 head, 161 lbs., 42.00. Good 3 to 4, 8 head, 186 lbs., 31.00; 9 head, 206 lbs., 31.50. Utility 1 to 2, 5 head, 154 lbs., 24.25; 163 to 182 lbs., 28.00 to 31.00 (29.61). Cull 1, 133 to 138 lbs., 22.25 to 23.75 (23.18).

Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 10 head, 45 lbs., 132.00; 5 head, 88 lbs., 118.00; 90 to 98 lbs., 111.00 to 117.00 (114.48). Medium and large frame 2, 8 head, 53 lbs., 106.00.

Slaughter kids: Selection 1, 9 head, 56 lbs., 140.50; 13 head, 63 lbs., 142.00. Selection 2, 5 head, 87 lbs., 111.00.

Slaughter nannies/does: Selection 1, 25 head, 110 lbs., 64.00.

Bred ewes: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 48 head, 2 to 3 years old, lamb March 1, 185 lbs., 109.00 per head; 13 head, 4 to 5 years old, lamb March 1, 197 lbs., 80.50 per head.
