SECPA's irrigation and motor efficiency workshop well attended

Colorado

Fifty-six individuals from three states attended Southeast Colorado Power Association's Motor and Irrigation Efficiency Workshop on Feb. 6. Greg Stark, Professional Engineer and Texas A&M University instructor, presented a comprehensive one-day workshop on extensive irrigation efficiency practices to a diverse audience of farmers, utility professionals, city employees, and those from Natural Resources Conservation Services.

"Little management issues you put off, like fixing leaks," Stark said, "are costing you dollars. But if you take care of a lot of little things to improve your efficiency, the long term savings will be significant."

Stark provided specifics on a myriad of topics including operating methods of irrigation systems to reduce electric bills, the advantages/disadvantages of motors versus engines, and cost-benefit analysis for converting to high efficiency motors. He also gave participants a fuel cost comparison website (www.oznet.ksu.edu/mil) which allows irrigators to estimate pumping plant efficiencies using their fuels bills, compared to other fuel types.

Workshop attendees enjoyed a brisket lunch from Lucky's Barbeque. Participants received a SECPA cap, a CFL light bulb and course materials containing vast motor and irrigation efficiency data. This intensive training was sponsored by Southeast Colorado Power Association, Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association Inc., Western Area Power Administration and Baca County Conservation District.
