Pecan conference scheduled

New Mexico

The 42nd annual pecan conference, hosted by the Western Pecan Growers Association and New Mexico State University, is scheduled for March 2 to 4 in Las Cruces at the Hotel Encanto.

"This is a great place for growers to get together and discuss their ideas and to talk about what's happening in the industry," said Richard Heerema, NMSU Extension pecan specialist. He said presenters and attendees for this year's conference will come from as far as California and Georgia.

The annual pecan conference is geared toward all pecan growers, from those with as little as five to 10 acres to those with more than 1,000 acres.

"This conference is valuable for growers at every level," Heerema said. "Small growers can take away some valuable information from the large growers and the speakers at this event."

The WPGA represents growers from New Mexico, West Texas, Arizona and California.

Organizers say the conference's educational program will include a wide range of topics of interest to growers throughout the western growing region. Speakers will address pest control, irrigation options, fertilizer use and orchard management.

Prizes will be awarded for the best pecan sample during the WPGA Pecan Show and the best pecan recipe during the Pecan Food Fantasy contest. The conference will also have the largest gathering of nut harvesting and processing equipment in New Mexico.
