K-State plant pathology ranks eight nationally in faculty productivity

Kansas

The department of plant pathology at Kansas State University ranks eighth in the country, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education's 2007 assessment of scholarly productivity.

John Leslie, department head, says the high ranking is especially noteworthy coming as it does in a year when the department is recovering from the departures of several senior faculty members.

"Five new faculty have been hired during the last three years," Leslie said, "and two more are being recruited. As these new faculty members, who compose more than a third of the department's strength, become recognized for their research excellence, our national rating should remain steady or increase."

The ranking can be viewed at http://chronicle.com/stats/productivity/

The Chronicle judges faculty members on as many as five factors, depending on the most important variables in a given discipline: books published, journal publications, citations in other journal articles, federal grant dollars, and honors and awards.
