Beef plant waste bill passes

PIERRE, S.D. (AP)--A bill that would allow Northern Beef Packers at Aberdeen to more easily dispose of its wastewater has received final legislative approval.

The state Senate approved HB1148 by a unanimous vote Feb. 19, sending the measure to Gov. Mike Rounds.

The packing plant hopes to dispose of its wastewater by supplying it to area farmers who irrigate their corn.

South Dakota voters approved a ballot measure in 1990 that requires the Legislature to decide if disposal of large amounts of waste, including wastewater, is environmentally safe and in the public interest.

HB1148 would exempt the NBP plant from that mandate.
