Spring planting, preparation under way

New Mexico

There were 6.5 days suitable for field work during the week ending March 16, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, New Mexico Field Office, March 17.

Topsoil moisture was 49 percent very short, 29 percent short and 22 percent adequate. Wind damage was 19 percent light, 25 percent moderate and 12 percent severe. Freeze damage was 12 percent light and 2 percent moderate. Farmers spent the week preparing fields and irrigation ditches for spring planting and planting some crops.

Alfalfa was reported as 1 percent very poor, 45 percent poor, 30 percent fair and 24 percent good. Irrigated winter wheat was reported as 8 percent poor, 79 percent fair, 8 percent good, and 5 percent excellent, with 35 percent being reported as grazed. Dry winter wheat was reported as 49 percent very poor, 50 percent poor, and 1 percent fair, with 6 percent being reported as grazed. Total winter wheat was reported as 29 percent very poor, 34 percent poor, 32 percent fair, 3 percent good, and 2 percent excellent, with 18 percent being reported as grazed.

Onions were reported as being 90 percent planted. Lettuce was reported as 20 percent fair, 20 percent good and 60 percent excellent. Chile was reported as 6 percent planted.

Cattle conditions were reported as 1 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 46 percent fair, 36 percent good and 10 percent excellent. Sheep conditions were reported as 6 percent very poor, 17 percent poor, 66 percent fair and 11 percent good. Range and pasture conditions were reported as 19 percent very poor, 35 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 17 percent good and 3 percent excellent. Livestock producers have been busy supplemental feeding, hauling water and helping with calving. Parts of the state experienced high winds this past week.
