North Dakota tops nation in honey production

FARGO, N.D. (AP)--North Dakota farmers produced 31.1 million pounds of honey in 2007, tops in the nation for the fourth consecutive year, the Department of Agriculture says.

Production in the state was up 20 percent from 2006, the agency said.

The number of honey-producing colonies in 2007 was 420,000, up 70,000 from 2006.

Yield per colony was 74, the same as in 2006, the department said.

Prices for the 2007 crop averaged 92 cents per pound, unchanged from the previous year.

Nationwide, honey production last year was down 4 percent to 148 million pounds.

California had the second-highest production in the country, at 13.6 million pounds.
