Most of state below average for moistureColorado Most of Colorado received below average amounts of precipitation during the week ending March 16, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Colorado Field Office, March 17. Overall, snowpack is down 1 percent from the previous week to 126 percent of the state average. Temperatures across the state were at or above average for this time of year. Farmers were allowed 4.1 days in the field for spring operations. Winter wheat was 8 percent pastured last week, with the crop rated in mostly fair to good condition. Spring barley was 2 percent seeded by week's end, which is behind the five-year average of 9 percent. Dry onions were 4 percent planted and spring wheat was 1 percent seeded. Pasture and range feed conditions were rated mostly fair to poor across the state. The above-average levels of snowpack in the mountains are keeping ranchers hopeful for conditions to improve during the growing season. Forty-two percent of cows have calved since Jan. 1 while 34 percent of the ewes have lambed during the same time frame. Both are 2 percent ahead of the five-year average. Death losses for cattle were rated at average for the week and sheep were slightly above average. Stored feed supplies are rated at average for this time of year. 3/24/08 Date: 3/19/08 Advertisement
