K-State veterinary students earn Phi Zeta Research Day awardsKansas Posters, case reports, presentations on basic science and clinical science research projects and other presentations have earned several Kansas State University students awards at the annual Phi Zeta Research Day. The event, March 4, was sponsored by K-State's Sigma chapter of Phi Zeta, the veterinary honor society. Students earning awards include: Chanran Ganta, postdoctoral fellow in anatomy and physiology, Manhattan, poster award, "Combination of Nanogel Polyethylene glycol-Polyethylenimine and 6 (hydroxymethyl)-1,4-anthracenedione as an Anticancer Nanomedicine." Megan Jacob, graduate student in pathobiology, Manhattan, first place, Mahlon Vorhies Production Animal award, "Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Feeding of Distillers Grains in Cattle." Phillip Jones, graduate student in clinical sciences, Manhattan, second place, clinical science research presentation, "Arthrodesis of the Proximal Interphalangeal Joint Without Disarticulation and Transection of the Extensor Tendon: A Retrospective Study." Anna Mashchenko, nondegree graduate student in biomedical science, Manhattan, poster award, "The Development of the Multiprobe Real Time Polymerase Chanin Reaction Assay for the Detection and Quantitative Analysis of Rickettsia Rickettsii." John Patton, graduate student in pathobiology, Manhattan, third place, basic science research presentation, "The Replication of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus in Association with CD163 and Regulation by Cytokines." Lara Pickel, graduate student in electrical engineering, Manhattan, first place, basic science research presentation, "Inhibition of Human Lung Cancer Cell Growth by Angiotensin II (Ang II) Type 2 Receptor (AT2) Over-expression." Amanda Sherck, third-year student in veterinary medicine, Manhattan, poster award, "Characterization of the Secretory Patterns of Cortisol in Holstein Cattle." Kara Schulz, graduate student in biomedical science, Manhattan, case report award, "Use of a Novel Nylon Prosthesis--Wildcat Power Cord--for Cranial Cruciate Ligament Repair in a Cow." Elliot Stevens, fourth-year student in veterinary medicine, Manhattan, second place, basic science research presentation, "The Testing and Removal of Feeder Calves at the Time of Arrival to the Feedlot that are Persistently Infected with Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus and the Subsequent Outcome on Morbidity, Mortality and Performance." Keith DeDonder, fourth-year student in veterinary medicine, Reading, third place, clinical science research presentation, "Validation of Lung Scoring System by Comparison of Ante-Mortem Lung Sounds with Gross and Histological Post-Mortem Lung Lesions."
