Jennifer Smith received the Junior Bronze and Silver Awards

Texas

Jennifer Smith, Marshall, Texas, has earned the National Junior Angus Association's Bronze and Silver Awards, according to James Fisher, director of junior activities for the American Angus Association in Saint Joseph, Mo.

Jennifer is the 19-year-old daughter of Bob and Jeannie Smith and attends Texas A&M University. She is active in the NJAA and the Texas Junior Angus Associations where she serves as president. Jennifer has shown her Angus cattle and competed in showmanship at numerous shows on the local, state and national levels. She has entered the NJAA team sales and quiz bowl contests at the National Junior Angus Show as well as the All-American Certified Angus Beef Cook-off. She has also attended the Leaders Engaged in Angus Development Conference. A member since 1998, Jennifer has enrolled her cattle in the Angus Herd Improvement Records program and entered bulls in performance tests.

The Bronze and Silver Awards are the first two levels of the NJAA Recognition Program that began in 1972. Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards and then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Applicants are evaluated in the areas of junior Angus association activities and leadership, participation in showmanship, contests and shows, using performance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle.

The NJAA promotes the involvement of young people in raising Angus cattle, while also providing leadership and self-development opportunities for nearly 11,000 members nationwide.
