Cottonwood Crossing Cattle Dog Trial set for AprilKansas The 3rd annual Cottonwood Crossing Cattle Dog Trial will be held April 18 to 20 at the Gordon Christiansen ranch at Durham, Kan. This year there will also be a futurity for dogs less than 2 years of age as of Jan. 1. Spectators will have the opportunity to watch both young, inexperienced dogs and seasoned adult dogs compete on cattle handling ability. The futurity will have two complete go rounds. One will be held April 18 and the second will be in the morning April 19. The top 10 dogs will advance to the finals to be held in the morning, April 20. The handler and their dog will gather three head of cattle and put them through as many obstacles as possible in a timed event. Points are given for completion of each obstacle. The dog who gets its cattle through all the obstacles in the shortest amount of time is the winner. The open dog trial will be a separate trial each day. One will be held in the afternoon April 19 and another late April 20. The actual competition and judging will be the same as the futurity but with increasingly difficult challenges. Dogs from across the country will be competing, with entries already received from at least 6 states. Entries may be made until April 1 by calling 620-732-3320 or e-mailing patch@dtnspeed.net. Entries are limited to 30 dogs in the futurity and 20 in the open trial. The futurity will start at 2 p.m., April 18 with the competition on April 19 and 20 starting after the handlers meeting at 9 a.m. Spectators should bring their own lawn chairs.
