A look into Latin America

By Holly Martin

At the 2008 Commodity Classic, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer told farmers, "What happens in the international arena, these days often has far more bearing on the decisions that you make on how to run your farms and your ranches than what happens in Washington."

And he's right. We are in a global economy in the world of agriculture. A good crop across the ocean can push our prices lower. And in turn, a poor crop can give us a boost.

But other countries purchasing our commodities doesn't just happen by luck. There are groups working on behalf of you, the producer, to promote your products. One of those groups is the U.S. Wheat Associates, whose staff provides training and information to customers in over 100 countries on behalf of America's wheat producers.

Beginning March 24, Associate Editor Jennifer Latzke will be traveling with the U.S. Wheat Associates for 12 days on a tour of Latin America.

The tour's goal is to explore opportunities for American wheat within Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica and Mexico. These countries offer tremendous potential. The group will meet with millers, bakers and government officials.

Jennifer will be keeping our readers updated as she goes along her tour. She will be hosting a blog at: latinamericawheattour.hpj.com.

The blog will include her personal observations from the trip so even though we can't go along, we might feel like a part of the trip. She'll include her impressions of the countries and the people in them. She will share her photos and maybe even a fun anecdote or two.

Upon her return, we will be running in-depth stories about the tour. We hope it will be valuable to help you understand more about the customers of your product, as well as how U.S. Wheat Associates works with those customers.

Log on to her blog and keep track of her travels. It's the next best thing to hiding away in her suitcase.

Holly Martin can be reached by phone at 1-800-452-7171 ext. 1806 or e-mail at hmartin@hpj.com.
