34th Annual Southeast Colorado Bull Test reaches 104 day markColorado The final weigh day for the 34th Annual Southeast Colorado Bull Test was held on March 11, completing 104 days on test. On March 10, the bulls were weighed and the ultra-sound data was collected. The bulls were weighed again on March 11 and the Breeding Soundness Exams were performed. Weights from the two days were averaged together for an "official" off-test weight. With all of the nice weather, the bulls are doing very well and are still receiving the same high roughage/low energy ration they started the test with. This ration allows the bulls to express their growth potential without accumulating excess finish. At the present time, two-thirds of the bulls are gaining four pounds or more per day. As a group, the seven Hereford bulls, owned by Roderick Polled Herefords from Lindon, Colorado, are the highest gaining group at 4.23 pounds per day. The second highest group are the two Braunvieh bulls owned by Yellowrose Farms, Granada, Colo., gaining 4.18 pounds per day. Anetta's Angus from Springfield, Colo., has the highest gaining sire group of three or more bulls out of the same sire. This group of Leachman sired Angus bulls are gaining 4.25 pounds per day. The highest gaining individual is again Braunvieh bull number 33 owned by Yellowrose Farms from Granada, Colo., gaining 5.11 pounds per day. Second place is Hereford bull number 11, again from Roderick Polled Herefords, Lindon, Colo., gaining 5.07 pounds per day. The number 33 Braunvieh bull--a March 4, 2007, calf--also has the highest weight per day of age at 3.53 pounds. Second place is a Salers Dakota 41K son from White Woman Creek Salers, Leoti, Kan., with a 3.26 pound per day of age and a March 2, 2007, birthday. Topping the breed group weight per day of age category are the Braunvieh's with a 3.06 average followed by the Salers with a 3.01 pound per day of age average. The members of the Southeast Colorado Bull Test Association wish to thank Norman and Jean Dorenkamp and the Trail City Livestock crew for their care and feeding of the bulls. This test completes the sixteenth year the Dorenkamp's have hosted the test on their facilities.
