Texas Peanut Producers Board holds research hearingTexas Key peanut research projects will be presented to the Texas Peanut Producers Board March 25 before their quarterly meeting in Lubbock. Researchers who have received funds from TPPB will present their findings to the board and will submit formal proposals for new funding. Topics of research that have been conducted include weed control, the status of TPPB's breeding program and what releases are on the horizon, and disease forecasting models to improve control of Sclerotinia Blight. The public is invited to come hear what research issues are headlining peanut production in Texas. The hearing will begin at 1 p.m., in the Venetian Room at the Embassy Suites located on South Loop 289 in Lubbock, and should conclude at 5 p.m. Following the hearing, the board will prioritize new research proposals based on legitimacy to current Texas peanut production issues, and will then determine which proposals will be funded and how much funding will be allocated to researchers. In 2007, TPPB awarded $414,500 in funding for peanut research. Over 190,000 acres of peanuts were planted in Texas last year, making it a vital part of the state's economy and the second largest peanut producing state in the nation. 3/17/08 Date: 3/13/08 Advertisement
