Precipitation levels well below averageColorado Conditions across Colorado were cool and dry during the week ending March 9, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, March 10. Most of the state experienced precipitation levels well below average for this time of year. Overall, snowpack is 127 percent of the average. Farmers were allowed 3.2 days in the field for spring operations. Six percent of the winter wheat crop was reported being pastured last week. The crop was rated in mostly fair to good condition. Spring barley was 1 percent seeded by week's end. This is comparable with the 1 percent planted last year and behind the 5-year average of 4 percent. Pasture and range feed conditions were rated mostly fair to poor across the state. The Eastern Plains experienced a drier than average winter. Ranchers are hopeful for conditions to improve during the growing season. Thirty-three percent of cows have calved since Jan. 1 while 19 percent of the ewes have lambed during the same time frame. Death losses for cattle and sheep were slightly above average for the week. Stored feed supplies are rated at average for this time of year. 3/17/08 Date: 3/12/08
