MSGA members tour South America

Montana

The 2008 Beef Study Tour to South America held Jan. 19 to Feb. 1, sponsored by Montana State University and Beef magazine focused on beef cattle production systems in Argentina and Brazil. The tour was coordinated by travel consultant Renata Stephens of Brazilian Liaison, Minneapolis, Minn.,--a native Brazilian.

Tour participants experienced a variety of cattle ranching and feeding operations in each country. After visiting Argentina's renowned Pampas agricultural region, the group of 43 participants from around the U.S. flew into west-central Brazil's subtropical cattle farming regions.

"My wife, Lila, and I found this tour to be a wonderful mix of tourist sites and learning the beef industry of Argentina and Brazil," said Watty Taylor, MSGA Second Vice President. "There is no way to compare their beef industry with ours , we operate in a different environment. They have obviously learned a few tricks of the trade from us. We could probably learn a few from them."

"I enjoyed the opportunity to see how beef producers in Argentina and Brazil run their cattle operations," said Tom Hougen, MSGA First Vice President. "Although each region and each country is different, they face many of the same challenges we as U.S. producers face, including government regulations, environmental concerns, marketing issues, and the weather."

Joining MSGA officers Tom Hougen, Melstone and Watty and Lila Taylor, Busby, on the tour were Tim Skinner, Hall; Fred Horpestad, Lavina; Jim Almond and Clint Peck, Billings; Larry Holzworth, Bozeman; Alan Johnstone, Wilsall; Marty Earnheart, Helena; Julie Burke, Glasgow; Bob and Helen Hanson, White Sulpher Springs; Elner and Linda Eaton, Terry; Bob Sitz and Ted Williams, Harrison; Page Anderson, Three Forks; and James and June Dahle, Lame Deer.

--An overview of South American beef production by an Argentine agricultural journalist.
