Coloradoan elected vice president of National Farmers Union

Longtime Rocky Mountain Farmers Union member Claudia Svarstad was elected Vice President of National Farmers Union at the NFU Convention in Las Vegas, Nev., on March 4. Svarstad was president and CEO of National Farmers Union Insurance, 2002 to 2004, and served NFUI in various capacities for 33 years.

"Claudia Svarstad has been a valuable contributor to Rocky Mountain Farmers Union for many years, and she was an excellent, organized leader at NFUI," said RMFU President Kent Peppler. "She is a tireless worker to relieve world hunger. She will give our members and values an effective voice on the NFU board."

Svarstad's family has farmed in South Dakota since 1880, where she owns farmland and rangeland. Her brother is a fourth-generation farmer. She is a grassroots advocate active in the Alliance to End Hunger and Bread for the World, and she represented Colorado at the G-8 Summit. She holds a JD degree from the University of Colorado Law School.
