Water and the Future of Kansas Conference set for March 25 in Topeka

Kansas

Former Governors Mike Hayden and John Carlin will reflect on 25 years of progress in Kansas water policy at the Water and the Future of Kansas Conference on March 25 in Topeka. The meeting will be held at the Capitol Plaza Hotel, 1717 SW Topeka Boulevard.

Doug Kluck, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of Kansas City, will discuss the impacts of climate change on Kansas and the Central Plains. His presentation will be made after lunch.

A diverse set of water resource topics will be discussed in the plenary sessions. There will be presentations on the High Plains aquifer, bioenergy and water, smart community growth, and reservoir sedimentation. Five concurrent sessions, each with breakout presentations will be held during the day. Topics include emerging water and groundwater contaminants, sedimentation in federal reservoirs, rural and urban water quality, bioenergy and water, and the High Plains aquifer.

A variety of displays on on-going water research, policy issues, and water resource support groups will be available for viewing during the conference.

The annual conference is a forum for representatives of state agencies, universities, and groups who study, plan, regulate, or want to influence water management decisions. Everyone interested in water resources in Kansas, however, is encouraged to attend. The conference is sponsored by the Kansas Water Resources Institute, the Kansas Center for Agricultural Resources and the Environment, K-State Research and Extension, and the U.S. Geological Survey.

To register to attend, contact the Conference Registration Office at registration@k-state.edu or call 785-532-5569 or 800-432-8222. For answers to your questions about the conference, call the Conference Office at 785-532-5575 or 800-622-2578 or e-mail debbieh@k-state.edu.
