Texas corn producers win National Yield ContestTexas Innovative production techniques and improved seed varieties helped Texas corn growers achieve top numbers in the National Corn Grower Association 2007 National Corn Yield Contest. Steven Albracht of Hart, Cartrite Farms in Sunray, and Donny Carpenter Farms in Dimmitt were each honored for their corn yield achievements at the 2008 Commodity Classic, the combined convention and trade show of NCGA, the American Soybean Association and the National Association of Wheat Growers held Feb. 28 to March 1 in Nashville, Tenn. The 27 national winners in nine production categories had verified yields averaging more than 298 bushels per acre, compared to the estimated national average of 153 bushels per acre. Ten winners (and 24 entrants overall) posted yields of more than 300 bushels per acre. Steven Albracht won first place in the Ridge Till Irrigated category with an average yield of 340.24 bushels per acre using Pioneer hybrid 33Y74. Cartrite Farms was awarded second place in the Irrigated category posting an average of 318.94 bushels per acre using Pioneer hybrid 31N28. Donny Carpenter Farms placed third in the No Till/Strip Irrigated category with an average of 340.58 bushels per acre using Pioneer hybrid 33Y74. This year's contest saw its highest number of entries yet, with several entrants scoring yields more than double the estimated average.
