St. Onge livestock auction

The St. Onge Livestock Sales Co., Ltd., St. Onge, S.D., reported receipts of 2,230 head Feb. 29, compared to 226 head two weeks ago, and 1,551 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Compared to two weeks ago, a feeder cattle trend was not applicable, however a higher undertone was noted. Feeder cows sold steady to weak. Slaughter cows and bulls sold mostly steady. Demand was moderate to good with most interest expressed on feeder and stocker cattle. Slaughter cows and bulls made up 2% of the offering, feeder cows 10% and feeders 85%. The feeder supply included 27% steers and 73% heifers, with 70% of the run weighed over 600 pounds.

Feeder steers: Medium and large frame 1, 16 head, 443 lbs., 137.00; 550 to 585 lbs., 122.00 to 128.00 (125.56); 17 head, 608 to 628 lbs., 119.50 to 122.00 (120.24); 653 to 664 lbs., 114.00 to 116.75 (116.11); 701 to 731 lbs., 108.25 to 110.50 (109.24); 754 to 784 lbs., 100.00 to 101.50 (100.23); 801 to 818 lbs., 95.00 to 96.75 (96.24); 5 head, 908 lbs., 92.50. Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 9 head, 622 to 626 lbs., 110.50 to 116.50 (113.82); 658 to 691 lbs., 103.00 to 112.00 (107.60). Large frame 1, 6 head, 557 lbs., 102.50; 10 head, 685 lbs., 98.00 calves.

Feeder heifers: Medium and large frame 1, 14 head, 401 lbs., 128.00; 458 to 492 lbs., 118.00 to 126.00 (122.39); 505 to 549 lbs., 113.00 to 118.00 (114.95);554 to 585 lbs., 110.75 to 114.75 (112.81); 18 head, 586 lbs., 109.00 fleshy; 605 to 639 lbs., 104.00 to 113.00 (106.37); 80 head, 641 lbs., 122.50 replacement; 651 to 677 lbs., 102.00 to 104.25 (102.93); 40 head, 722 lbs., 99.00; 27 head, 735 lbs., 96.50 fleshy. Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 19 head, 573 to 598 lbs., 103.00 to 109.00 (104.32); 612 to 628 lbs., 103.50 to 107.00 (104.10).

Feeder bulls: Medium and large frame 1, 5 head, 543 lbs., 120.00; 7 head, 651 lbs., 107.00 calves.

Feeder cows: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, heiferettes, 800 to 1000 lbs., 76.00 to 87.00; 3 to 4 years old, 900 to 1100 lbs., 69.00 to 75.50; young, 965 to 1300 lbs., 58.00 to 66.00; middle aged to aged, 1050 to 1350 lbs 52.00 to 55.50, few full 49.00 to 51.00. Large frame, 1400 to 1530 lbs., 52.50 to 55.00.

Slaughter cows: Breakers, 75 to 80% lean, 1420 to 1895 lbs., 54.50 to 56.00; high dressing, 58.50. Boners, 80 to 85% lean, 1145 to 1640 lbs., 52.00 to 55.50; high dressing, 57.50; low dressing, 48.00 to 49.00. Lean, 85 to 90% lean, 1000 to 1330 lbs., 48.00 to 50.50; low dressing, 45.00 to 46.00; 900 to 1000 lbs., 46.50 to 48.00.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 to 2, 1680 to 2015 lbs., 64.50 to 66.50; low dressing, 59.50 to 62.25.
