Pflugerville watershed workshop set March 25Texas The Texas Watershed Steward Program will host a free workshop from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., March 25 at the Lions Club, 500 North Railroad, in Pflugerville. The workshop, sponsored by the Texas AgriLife Extension Service, will address watershed systems, water quality and community-driven watershed protection and management. "Participants will receive information and training that will show the importance of watersheds and how to form a watershed action group and initiate actions to enhance community water resources," said Jennifer Peterson, AgriLife Extension program specialist in College Station. The workshop is being held in Pflugerville because Travis County is home to the Gilleland Creek Watershed, Peterson said. Gilleland Creek flows from the headwaters northwest of Pflugerville to the Colorado River east of Austin and then to the Gulf of Mexico. "Gilleland Creek is threatened by high levels of bacteria that have washed into the creek from agricultural lands and as a result of urban development," she said. "These bacteria can indicate the presence of pathogenic organisms that can cause disease in animals and people." The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the Lower Colorado River Authority and other stakeholder groups have been working on a plan to improve the water quality in Gilleland Creek. The workshop provides an excellent opportunity for people to become involved in the process, Peterson said. Along with instruction and training, workshop participants will receive a copy of the Texas Watershed Steward curriculum handbook and a certificate of completion. The program offers seven continuing education units in soil and water management for certified crop advisors and seven continuing education credits for certified teachers. It also offers three general continuing education units for Texas Department of Agriculture pesticide license holders.
