Oklahoma ag program wins national award

ALVA, Okla. --Toyota Motor Sales awarded a 2008 Toyota Tundra truck to the Agriculture Business Management Program at the Northwest Technology Center's campus seminar center luncheon Feb. 28. Ag Business Management Coordinator, Barclay Holt, and his staff earned the truck as part of being honored with the Outstanding Postsecondary/Adult Program Award from the National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE).

Holt was presented the truck on a two-year lease, and accepted on behalf of the Agriculture Business Management department. Holt works primarily with adults involved in different fields of agriculture and usually meets on a one-on-one basis at his students' operations in order to better understand their program and to provide effective farm management strategy.

"My instruction concepts and approaches to teaching in a technology center setting have moved away from the classroom," said Holt. "The clients I assist want just that--assistance. My new Tundra will provide me with the reliable transportation that I need to ensure I can visit my clients at their location and to tow and haul the necessary equipment."

"A number of communities have leadership programs, but Barclay expanded the scope of this program to bring people together to network and solve a challenge which all communities had in common," said Dwight Hughes, assistant superintendent at Northwest Technology Center. "As a result of this program, our area communities are working together on issues that benefit everyone in northwest Oklahoma."

Assisting a range of people involved in agribusiness and alternative agriculture entities is the main focus of the Agricultural Business Management program, as well as providing high school Agricultural Education programs and community leadership development.

The 2008 Tundra truck giveaway is a first in Toyota's long-standing commitment to agricultural education in the U.S. The relationship with NAAE is part of a $1.4 million two-year commitment from the automotive manufacturer to the National FFA Foundation.

NAAE selects one postsecondary agricultural program from each of its six regions across the United States to be named the areas top educator. The Northwest Technology Center represents Region II, which includes Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

A department representative from each of the six postsecondary programs will receive a Toyota Tundra Double Cab 5.7L V8 4X4 on a two-year lease, as will six teachers selected by NAAE as the country's top educators throughout middle school to postsecondary institutions. NAAE annually selects the 12 honorees through an application process. Toyota has committed 12 trucks for the 2007 winners and another 12 for the 2008 winners, to be awarded in January of the following year.
