National conference hosts 4-H, FFA consumer contests

More than eight hundred youth from more than thirty states along with Alberta, Canada participated in the 88th Annual Western National Roundup Conference Jan. 9 to 13 in Denver, Colo. 4-H and FFA members between the ages of 14 and 19 qualify for the conference either by winning their home state's contest or by being chosen as a state delegate. Consumer Decision Making, Family and Consumer Sciences Bowl and Family and Consumer Sciences Presentations were a few of the national competitions held during the week.

Consumer Decision Making is a competitive event that teaches youth financial management, consumerism, and decision making skills. The event consists of six classes, with two sets of reasons, and a group process activity. Contestants may participate in Family and Consumers Sciences Presentations as an individual or team of two. Team and individual presentations will be judged on the same criteria and will be competing against one another (there are not separate team and individual categories). The subject matter must pertain to the home economics or family and consumer sciences subject matter.

The Family and Consumer Sciences Bowl, formerly the Home Economics Bowl, also consists of an individual or a team of two and is similar to Jeopardy. Team and individual presentations will be judged on the same criteria and will be competing against one another (there are not separate team and individual categories). Each contestant must take a written exam at the scheduled time. This test will consist of 50 questions taken from the contest reference material. Test scores will determine the order of play, thereby establishing the bracket. Test scores are to establish seat only- they will not figure into the final determination of a winner. Seating will be determined as follows: highest scoring team will play lowest scoring team in the initial round, and so on.

Below is a full listing of the results for each of the consumer contests. Please check the conference website at www.westernnationalroundup.org for more information about the event, keynote speakers and results from other contests held during the conference.
