NFL official, dairy farmer addresses USGC, NSPWalt Coleman, an officiator with the National Football League and a fifth-generation dairy farmer from Arkansas, addressed members of the U.S. Grains Council at the Council's 5th International Marketing Conference and 48th Annual Membership Meeting in San Antonio, Texas. Coleman linked the pressure of making tough decisions to some of the challenges faced by those in today's agricultural industry. As an officiator who has been criticized for making questionable calls, Coleman told the audience that he has learned not to take himself too seriously when others are quick to criticize. "You're going to find yourself in embarrassing situations and in moments when some people will find something wrong with you, but you have to be willing to be involved, know you have tough decisions to make, but make them and move on," he said. Coleman has learned to take it all in stride, saying that those in the grains industry must also learn to laugh at themselves and to continue making tough decisions. He encouraged the audience to take risks. "It takes people who are willing to be involved to stick their necks out and make difficult decisions," he said. "It's the same in your industry. Somebody has to do it." Coleman said when he first began work as an NFL official, he was told that people expected him to be perfect and to improve on being perfect over time. His advice to the USGC audience was similar: "We should expect ourselves to be the best we can be and strive for excellence," he told them. 3/10/08 Date: 3/4/08
