Most topsoil rated at adequateKansas The state of Kansas experienced normal temperatures for the month of February, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Kansas Field Office, March 3. Most of the state received moderate precipitation throughout the month in the form of snow or rain. Topsoil moisture was rated at 4 percent very short, 12 percent short, 62 percent adequate, and 22 percent surplus. Primary farm activity involved top dressing fertilizer and beginning weed control. Livestock activities primarily involved calving and lambing. Wheat condition was rated 5 percent very poor, 16 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 35 percent good, and 7 percent excellent. Wind damage to the wheat crop across the state was 85 percent no damage, 9 percent having light damage, 4 percent with moderate damage, and 2 percent with severe wind damage. Freeze damage to wheat has been rated at 87 percent with no damage, 10 percent with light damage, and 3 percent of the wheat has moderate freeze damage. Overall winterkill to the 2008 wheat crop was rated at 81 percent with no winterkill, 16 percent with light winterkill, and 3 percent with moderate winterkill. The amount of the wheat crop acreage that has been lost to winterkill is 4 percent of the total. Feed grain supplies were rated 1 percent very short, 10 percent short, 86 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus.
