By David Colburn

Logan County Livestock Extension Agent

It's been an interesting beginning for the Great Western Beef Expo cattle this year with the rollercoaster weather here in northeastern Colorado. At the 77-day mark of the 156-day test, the 155 animals in the test gained an overall average of 2.94 pounds per day after deducting a four percent pencil shrink. The average feed conversion ratio was one pound of gain per 5.99 pounds of feed.

First in feed conversion with a ratio of one pound of gain per 4.41 pounds of feed was a group of Angus sired steers entered by the Y Cross Ranch, Horse Creek, Wy. This group is sired by AAR Neutron 059 and out of Angus cross cows.

Limousin heifers from Coleman Limousin Ranch, Charlo, Mont., led the 31 sire groups in feedlot gain with an average of 3.75 pounds per day. These heifers are sired by Cole 24P and out of Angus cross cows.

The top 10 groups in feed conversion represented 4 different breeds of sires: Angus, Charolais, Limousin and Shorthorn. Four breeds are included in the top ten in feedlot gain: Limousin, Angus, Balancer and Charolais.

The top 10 pens in feed conversion are: Y Cross Ranch, Horse Creek, Wyo., Angus, one pound of gain per 4.41 pounds of feed; Touchstone Angus, Lusk, WY, Angus, 1:4.43; Schurrtop Angus & Charolais, Farnam, Neb., Angus heifers, 1:4.95; Schurrtop Angus & Charolais, Farnam, Neb., Charolais, 1:5.08; Hunt Limousin Ranch, Oxford, Neb., Limousin, 1:5.12; Spring Canyon Ranch, Crook, Colo., Shorthorn, 1:5.17; DeBrucycker Charolais, Dutton, Mont., Charolais heifers, 1:5.22; Coleman Limousin Ranch, Charlo, Mont., Limousin heifers, 1:5.32; DeBruycker Charolais, Dutton, Mont., Charolais, 1:5.33; and Touchstone Angus, Lusk, Wyo., 1:5.34.
