Celebrate home baking, community spirit during Bake and Take Month

Kansas

Giving a homemade gift is a great way to show someone you care. And by doing so in Bake and Take Month, Kansas residents will be entered into a drawing to win a copy of the 144-page hardcover book Kansas Gold: Historical Notes and Heritage Recipes from the First Fifty Years of the Kansas Wheat Commission.

The Kansas Wheat Commission and Kansas Association of Wheat Growers announce Bake and Take Month, taking place in March 2008. Kansas Wheat encourages everyone to celebrate this event by baking a product that is made from wheat or wheat products and taking it to a neighbor, friend or relative. In addition, Kansas residents who write in to share their Bake and Take experience by April 14 will be entered into a drawing to win a copy of the Kansas Wheat Commission's book, Kansas Gold. Prizes will be awarded in two categories: youth (up to age 17) and adult (18 and up).

In 1971, Bake and Take was created by the Kansas Wheathearts, an auxiliary organization of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, to share baked goods with family members, friends, neighbors, and those in need, generating goodwill in the community. As the largest wheat-producing county in the state, the Sumner County Wheathearts wanted to share in the celebration of the harvest. This allowed members of the community to bake their favorite dish and share it with someone special. Even though the Kansas Wheathearts disbanded in 2001, Kansas Wheat continues these efforts today by partnering with the Wheat Foods Council in a national promotion of Bake and Take Month. Join us in celebrating Bake and Take in your community.

To enter the drawing for a chance to win Kansas Gold, Kansas participants should e-mail kswheat@kswheat.com or write to Kansas Wheat, 217 Southwind Place, Manhattan, KS 66503. Participants should include the following information: name, organization (4-H club, FCE, church group, etc.), phone number, mailing address, category (youth or adult), and description of the Bake and Take activity (baked goods made, any community service involved, who received the gifts and how many years they have taken part in Bake and Take). Entries must be postmarked by April 14.

Kansas Gold is a decade-by-decade review of the first half-century of the Kansas Wheat Commission. Each chapter reviews the decade's historical trends and happenings within the wheat industry. The book includes 50 heritage wheat recipes. Along with recipes, perspectives are given on diet fads and nutrition trends from each decade. The book also has insights from important individuals who played a unique role in the Commission's past and have a vision for the future.

Continue the longstanding Kansas tradition of Bake and Take by choosing your favorite baked item to share with someone special in March 2008. Visit http://www.kansaswheat.org/general.asp?id=168 for a Bake and Take brochure and entry form.
