Agriculture Secretary Gonzalez announces cabbage plan for third gradersNew Mexico New Mexico Department of Agriculture Secretary Dr. I Miley Gonzalez announced Feb. 7 that a Union Springs, Ala., company is offering free cabbage plants to all third graders in New Mexico who are interested in growing a vegetable plant. The company, Bonnie Plant Farm, will deliver the plants to any school in New Mexico whose third-grade students want to learn the importance of agriculture to the nation. The variety being offered, O.S. Cross, produces heads up to 50 pounds, which should be interesting to young students. Each student participating in the experience will also receive gardening instructions for cabbage plants and other vegetable crops. "I salute Bonnie Plant Farm for their efforts in teaching young students the importance of agriculture in this country," Dr. Gonzalez said. The company will offer a $1,000 scholarship in New Mexico, and the winner will be selected in a drawing. Schools whose students are interested in participating in the program can visit www.bonnieplants.com or call Ellis Ingram, Bonnie Plant Farm customer service director at 800-345-3384 or Danny Edwards, McIntosh, New Mexico at 505-384-1080 by April 15. The company will deliver the plants and growing instructions to schools shortly after the requests are received.
