Agribusiness personnel management conference set April 16, 17 in San AntonioTexas A personnel management conference for agribusiness will be held April 16 and 17 at the Windcrest Civic Center, 9310 Jim Seal Drive, in northeast San Antonio. The conference, "Effective Employee Management for Agribusiness," will help agricultural managers with the challenges of managing human resources, according to program coordinators. Sponsors include the Texas AgriLife Extension Service, First Victoria National Bank, Purina Mills LLC, South Texas Cotton and Grain Association, Southern Risk Management Education Center, Texas Cattle Feeders Association, Texas Pecan Growers Association, Texas Produce Association and Texas Vegetable Association. "Labor issues, immigration reform and legal issues related to labor management are major concerns for agribusiness," said Jose Pena, AgriLife Extension economist and conference presenter. "The sessions and curriculum of the conference have been designed to address these and other important topics for the agribusiness manager." Conference sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 16, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. A mixer sponsored by Purina Mills will follow at 5:30 p.m. Sessions on April 17 will begin at 8 a.m., and the conference will conclude at 3 p.m. Program topics will include agricultural personnel management principles, non-citizen worker compliance issues, creating a successful work environment, effective training, employee diversity, influencing through leadership, compensation, evaluating employee performance, and employment and labor law. This is the third such agribusiness personnel management conference to be offered in Texas, Pena said. Similar conferences were held in Amarillo in 2006 and in Lubbock in 2007. "These conferences have been well-attended, and we've gotten some very positive feedback from attendees," he said. "In a post-conference survey, 90 percent of attendees indicated they had altered management practices based on what they learned from the conference. The fee will be $175 per person for registration postmarked after April 5.
