West Plains cattle sales

The Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 4,753 head June 3, compared to 2,992 head last week and 4,156 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, steers and heifers sold firm to $3 higher, with several front-end steer calves under 550 pounds $2 to $4 higher. The supply was moderate. Demand was good. Quality started off somewhat lackluster, but turned for the better by midday allowing buyers to show their muscle if they intended to capture the good ones. Fuel and trucking cost continues to be a main issue around the auction, as the old phrase "pain at the pump" has more recently been over shadowed by "sick at the station" and "nausea at the nozzle" for most. The supply consisted of 54% steers and 46% heifers, with nearly 41% over 600 pounds.
