Winners parade at 2008 Rocky Mountain Junior Beef Expo

The Rocky Mountain Junior Beef Expo opened May 24, to sunny skies and a flurry of activity. Young people, and their families, between the ages of 8 and 20 arrived in Greeley to participate in the 10th annual Expo. These young entrepreneurs showed 153 head of heifers and steers and participated in a livestock judging contest during the 2-day show. They came from Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. This show is sponsored by donations from individuals, organizations, and companies interested in promoting the beef industry. The show is managed by Gail Fiolkoski and Steve Fiolkoski of Pierce, Colo., and Gene Inloes and Sharon Heiden Inloes of Greeley, along with a large number of volunteers.

On May 24, 40 youngsters participated in the beef cattle judging contest, judging eight classes of heifers, bulls and market steers. Livestock for this event was furnished by Sidwell Hay and Cattle (Gill), Walter Angus (Platteville), Altenburg Super Baldy Ranch (Fort Collins), Coyote Ridge Ranch (LaSalle), SEGA Gelbvieh (Pierce), and Producers Feedlot (Greeley).

Winners for the Junior Division (8-13) were Samantha Trehal, Kiowa, Colo., champion, and Austin Reitzenstein, Kersey, Colo., reserve champion. Winners in the Senior Division (14-20) were Clay Carlson, Stoneham, Colo., champion and Laddy Trehal, Kiowa, Colo., reserve champion.

The heifer show May 25 was judged by Travis Taylor, Karvel, Colo. Taylor attended Northeastern Junior College and Colorado State University. He coached the University of Wyoming Livestock Judging Team for seven years and is currently working on the family ranch.

Angus Heifers--Austin Reitzenstein, Kersey, Colo., champion; Tori Shepard, Wheatland, Wyo., reserve champion.

Balancers Heifers--Ariana De La Garza, Centennial, Colo., champion;

Wyatt Taylor, Kiowa, Colo., reserve champion.

Charolais Heifers--Chance Bauman, Cheyenne, Wyo., champion; P. D. Miller, Torrington, Wyo., reserve champion.

Chianina Heifers--Morgan Burke, Genoa, Neb., champion; Garrett Liss, Elbert, Colo., reserve champion.

Gelbvieh Heifers--Wyatt Taylor, Kiowa, Colo., champion; David Rea, Berthoud, Colo., reserve champion.

Limousin Heifers--Cassidy Woodard, Calhan, Colo., champion; Caitlyn Ochsner, Kersey, Colo., reserve champion.

Maine Heifers--Mitchell Bowman, Gill, Colo., champion; Lindsay Bowman, Gill, Colo., reserve champion.

Red Angus Heifers--Amanda VonForell, Wheatland, Wyo., champion.

Shorthorn Heifers--Skyler Miller, Torrington, Wyo., champion; Leigh Wacker, Millburn, Neb., reserve champion.

Simmental Heifers--Morgan Burke, Genoa, Neb., champion; Chance Bauman, Cheyenne, Wyo., reserve champion

In the Jackpot Commercial Heifer Show sponsored by Mike and Nancy Lohr, Lohr Cattle Company, of Gill, Colo., the winners were:

Champion Jackpot Commercial Heifer, Laddy Trehal, Kiowa, Colo.; Reserve Champion Jackpot Commercial Heifer, Kaitlyn Ochsner, Kersey, Colo.

The May 24 afternoon steer and market heifer show was judged by Dr. Doug Hixon of Laramie, Wyo. Dr. Hixon is the head of the animal science department at the University of Wyoming, and has judged in 30 states and at six National Junior Shows.

Supreme Champion Market Animal winner receiving $1,000, Tanner Anderson, Eaton Colo.; Reserve Supreme Champion Market Animal winner receiving $500, Jordan Stromberger, Champion, Neb.; Third Place Market Animal winner receiving $250, Amanda vonForell, Wheatland, Wyo.; Fourth Place Market Animal Winner receiving $100, Tanner Anderson, Eaton, Colo.

Individual breed winners include:

Shorthorn Steers--Leigh Wacker, Millburn, Neb., champion; Sarah Cooksey, Roggen, Colo., reserve champion.

Simmental Steers--Laurie Reid, Brighton, Colo., champion; Ginger Younger, Amarillo, Texas, reserve champion.

Crossbred Steers--Jordan Stromberger, Champion, Neb., champion; Tanner Anderson, Eaton, Colo., reserve champion.

Market Heifers--P. D. Miller, Torrington, Wyo., champion; Sage Childs, Livermore, Colo., reserve champion.
