West Plains regional salesThe Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 4,000 head June 17, compared to 3,570 head last week and 5,553 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo. Compared to last week, steers under 500 pounds were steady to $2 lower, 500 to 700 pounds were steady to $2 higher, over 700 pounds were steady. Heifers under 650 pounds were steady to $2 lower, over 650 pounds were firm to $2 higher. The supply was moderate, quality was up and down, although lighter calves under 500 pounds were not as attractive, but several pot loads of yearlings, especially heifers, were readily absorbed in a steady to stronger market. However a large reputation string of high quality fancy black-hided un-weaned steer calves having all their shots rang the 6 weight bell and sold $5 to $6 better than comparable calves in last week's auction. Demand was good, but best on high quality uniform calves and yearlings. And oddly enough, it's fairly difficult to tell there's a devastating flood disaster in Iowa, along with soaring corn and fuel prices, when these kinds of high quality uniform calves and yearlings hit the ring. The supply consisted of 48% steers and 52% heifers, with nearly 62% over 600 pounds.
