USDA sees 6 percent drop in Nebraska wheat crop

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP)--The June 1 conditions forecast says Nebraska's winter wheat crop will be 6 percent smaller than last year.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says it is expecting a Nebraska harvest of 79.6 million bushels. The average yield is pegged at 43 bushels an acre, down a bushel from last month's forecast but the same as last year.

The harvest acreage is down 6 percent from last year.

Nationally, the USDA is forecasting a crop of 1.82 billion bushels. That's 2 percent higher than the May 1 forecast and 20 percent above 2007.

The national yield is forecast at 45.3 bushels an acre, which is a bushel higher than last month's forecast and 3.1 bushels higher than last year.
